Don’t Be Afraid of The Dark: Not Scary Enough an

Don’t Be Afraid of The Dark let me down some.  I love Guillermo Del Toro’s work, and i had high hopes for this movie.  I didnt hate it by any means..it was just ok.  I expected a really freaky scary movie..instead it was a bit more tame and the scares were really just jumps and surprises.  I wanted a scary story.    Also I was not a fan how (like so many movies) the characters dont act like normal people..the decisions they make just dont feel right.  And i wanted more at the end..a real final blow/resolution type deal

Worth renting or watching on NetFlix..or if you go to the theater just dont go in thinking ur gonna see a scary move..expect some jumps

30 Minutes or Less: Should have been funnier with this cast, a Let Down

Ugh i had high hopes for 30 mins or Less because of Aziz Ansari.  Im a huge fan of his standup and his work on Parks and Rec.  He’s hilarious!  but why oh why was there not more laughs in this movie!  It just had a slow /boringish start ..so the first 30 mins really stuck with you as not so funny.  The last half was funnier and not bad..but still i think overall the dialogue was just odd at some times.  It was an odd chemistry between Aziz and Jesse- didnt feel natural.

The Change-Up: Better than i thought..just a few over the top parts

My friends and i went into the Change Up with low expectations..given it was killed by critics.  But yet again critics prove to be just plain wrong.  We all had a great time..it was a fun movie..with actually a good amount of laughs.  It wasnt like the story was unique or anything..its just a fun movie.

The issue i had with it was there were some odd cheesy moments thrown in that were totally unnecessary. Mostly around the babies in the movie..for example there was NO reason to throw in projectile poop, or to have CGI of one the babies playing with a knife.  It was just stupid that wasnt cut out!

Also there were just some weird story items..like one character in just a matter of weeks getting the hang of being a high end mergers attorney..and the other seemingly not bothering to improve his buddies’ life.  Would have been nice if both characters tried to help their friend’s life while in their body..it was a bit one sided.

But in the end..go in looking to laugh and enjoy a comedy that has a bit of grossness and some raunch…not a  high IQ movie..and you will enjoy it..dont believe the critics on this one!

Rise of the Planet of the Apes- WOW one of Summer’s best movies!

After movies like Transformers 3 letting me down, i was SO happy that Rise of the Planet of the Apes was so awesome!  I even went in with higher than normal expectations because the trailers were so well done…and it delivered!    Definitely a must see right now in the theaters and something ill be buying on DVD

A few things that stood out

1. The unique story line rocks..it really ties lots of things together that lead to the original movie.  They even cameo connections to the rocket that was in the original 1970’s movie and even a little charleton heston action!  The plot ties out very well and pulls you in..even some good laughs.

2. the effects were awesome..the CGI etc on the apes was very lifelike and you cant really tell much at all if things were real or CGI.

3. Good action scenes- definitely an awesome climax.

Go see this now and you wont regret it

Crazy Stupid Love- Great movie! With some great laughs

Crazy Stupid Love was great!- its the kind of chick-flick + comedy combo that even guys will like.   There were lots of solid laughs throughout the movie and even had a little twist that you probably arent expecting.   I think its funny how successful Ryan Gosling has gotten over the years, i remember watching him in the Young Hercules tv show lol..but he does a good job here but really this movie works because Steve Carrell is at his best.  He’s had some hits and misses outside of The Office..but this is definitely one of his hits.

Worth watching this now in theaters -its a fun movie

Cowboys and Aliens- Good but still no IronMan

Cowboys and Aliens was a fun movie but felt like it could have gone farther…it won points for being from Jon Favreau, and Daniel Craig is good as always.  Plus i love that its such a unique premise and includes people like Harrison Ford, Clancy Brown (who’s been rockin it since Highlander!), and Keith Carradine (Wild Bill in Deadwood).

A few things threw me .  First, the casting of the kid, same actor who was horrible in Last Airbender- and he brought along his same odd expressions and voice.  I hate to sound so mean but wow he was mis-cast..he and his character stood out way too much in the movie in an odd way..they could have used any number of better young actors to play the kid instead of him (Noah Ringer).   The second thing that got to me was that somehow at the end fight scene the cowboys and indians were able to hold off the army of aliens with just their guns and arrows..when during the whole movie their guns were pretty much useless.  At the least they could have all started picking up some of the alien weapons but nope.   And i was hoping at the end maybe even some opening for a sequel with Daniel Craigs character and Olivia Wilde’s. Also, Olivia Wilde’s character as another type of alien- how come she didnt have any other cool powers or tech?  I think they could have given her a much meatier role in this and would have made it better.

I guess in all- if you’re up for some sci fi action with some of all our favorite actors..this will be something you enjoy.  But i doubt it will be something many of us end up wanting to see over and over or buy on DVD.
